Why Everyone Waits Too Long to Laser Off Their Old Microblading (And Wishes They Hadn't)

Laser tattoo removal for old microblading is far gentler than most people expect, and it is the single best way to correct faded, discolored, or misshapen permanent makeup before starting fresh. At Haven Beauty Collective in Minnetonka, MN, nearly every client who finally does it says the same thing: I don't know why I didn't do this sooner.

There is a very specific kind of regret I see all the time. It is not regret about getting microblading in the first place. It is regret about waiting so long to fix it.

A client sits in my chair, brows that have gone gray or blue or shifted into a strange reddish tone, edges that no longer match her face, and she tells me she has been living with it for two, three, sometimes five years. She hid them under pencil. She avoided photos. She assumed she was stuck with it. And then twenty minutes into her first laser session she looks at me and says it. Every single time. That was it? Why did I wait?

So let's talk about why the fear is so common, why it is almost always bigger than the reality, and what actually happens when you laser off old microblading.

Why does old microblading need to be removed at all?

Microblading was never designed to last forever, and the way it fades is the real problem. When those hair stroke incisions were made, pigment was deposited into the skin by hand with a blade. Over time that pigment does not just disappear evenly. It breaks down.

Brown pigment is a blend of warm and cool color molecules, and they fade at different speeds. When the warm tones burn off first, you are left with the cool ones, which is why so much old microblading turns gray, blue, or ashy. This is called the Tyndall Effect, and it is one of the most common reasons people come to me. Other times the opposite happens and the brows shift orange or red as the cool components fade and stubborn iron oxide hangs on.

Add in blurred strokes, migration, asymmetry that has become more obvious as your face has changed, and outdated shapes that were trendy when you booked, and you have brows that no longer serve you. Correcting over the top rarely works. You cannot build something beautiful and natural on a foundation that is already muddy. The skin needs a clean canvas first.

Is laser removal of microblading painful?

This is the fear that keeps people waiting for years, and I want to be honest with you about it. It is not nothing. But it is nowhere near what your imagination has built up.

Most of my clients describe it as quick, hot snaps, similar to a rubber band flick against the skin, over in seconds per pass. The brow area is small. A full session is remarkably fast. I work with a gentle and experienced hand, and I talk you through every step so nothing catches you off guard.

The anticipation is genuinely the worst part. Almost everyone tenses up for the first pass and then physically relaxes because the reality is so much more manageable than the story they told themselves on the drive over. You are not getting a full body tattoo removed. You are getting a small, precise area treated by someone who has done this many times and understands exactly how PMU pigment behaves.

How does laser removal actually work on permanent makeup?

The laser targets the pigment sitting in your skin and breaks it into particles small enough for your body to clear away naturally through the lymphatic system. Picosecond technology fires in trillionths of a second, shattering the pigment with a photoacoustic effect rather than burning it, which means less heat, less trauma to the surrounding skin, and a more comfortable experience overall.

Removing permanent makeup is not the same as removing a body tattoo, and this is where working with someone who actually understands PMU matters enormously. Cosmetic pigments contain iron oxides and sometimes titanium dioxide, and those specific ingredients carry a real risk of paradoxical darkening, meaning they can turn darker instead of lighter if they are treated incorrectly. A general laser clinic that mostly removes body ink may not anticipate this. I do. I understand which pigments are in your skin, what order to treat them in, and how to protect you from the outcomes that give laser removal a scary reputation.

How many sessions will it take?

Most PMU removal takes somewhere between two and six sessions, spaced four to eight weeks apart to give your skin time to heal and your body time to flush the fragmented pigment. Some clients only need a light fade rather than complete removal, especially if the goal is simply to clear the canvas enough to build gorgeous new Nano Realism Brows on top. That is a conversation we have together based on your specific brows, your skin, and where you want to end up.

What is healing like after a session?

This is the part that surprises people most. There is virtually zero downtime. When pre-care is followed properly, there is no peeling and no scabbing, and you can apply skincare and makeup the very next day.

Right after treatment you may see frosting, a temporary white appearance on the skin caused by the process working. It fades within about half an hour. Over the next few days you may get some tenderness. Keep the area clean, wear your SPF religiously, and avoid soaking, saunas, and heavy sweating for the first few days.

The area is small, the aftercare is straightforward, and most people carry on with normal life the very next day.

The part nobody tells you about: what comes next

Here is what makes Haven different from a general removal clinic. I do not just take the old work away and send you off. I am one of the only providers in the Twin Cities who can both remove your old microblading and create your new brows, because Nano Realism Brows are my signature service and I have seventeen years of experience behind them.

That means your entire journey happens in one place with one artist who understands the full picture. We fade or remove what is no longer working, we let your skin heal properly, and then we build something that actually looks like you. Hair strokes placed one at a time with a single needle, mapped to your face, matched to your natural coloring, designed for the long term. It is the difference between patching a problem and actually solving it.

Why you should stop waiting

The clients who come to me almost never regret the removal. What they regret is the years they spent hiding brows they hated because they were scared of a process that turned out to be so much easier than they imagined.

If your old microblading has gone gray, blue, orange, or blurry, if the shape no longer fits your face, or if you are simply ready for something better, this is your reminder that you do not have to live with it. You are not stuck. And there is a very good chance you will walk out of your first session wondering, like everyone before you, why you waited so long.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can old microblading be completely removed with laser? Yes. In most cases laser removal can clear old microblading over a series of sessions, or fade it enough to build beautiful new permanent makeup on top. The right approach depends on your pigment, your skin, and your goals.

How much does laser PMU removal cost at Haven? Laser removal is $200 per session. Most clients need between two and six sessions depending on how much pigment is present and whether the goal is a full fade or complete removal. We also have packages available to help with cost if more than two session are needed.

How long should I wait after laser removal before getting new brows? I recommend waiting twelve weeks after your final laser session before starting new permanent makeup. This gives your skin time to fully heal and settle so your new brows heal cleanly and beautifully.

Does laser removal leave a scar? When performed correctly with picosecond technology and proper aftercare, scarring is very unlikely. Most scarring we’ve seen has been due to incorrect depth from the original tattoo artist.

I got my microblading somewhere else. Can you still remove it? Absolutely. Most of my removal clients had their original work done elsewhere. I assess what is in your skin and build a plan from there.
